Supreme Court to hold 2-day programme on POCSO Act

A two-day nationwide seminar on the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act is being organised by the Supreme Court Committee on Juvenile Justice starting on Saturday.

The Chief Justice of India, D.Y. Chandrachud, and the Minister for Women and Child Development, Smriti Zubin Irani, will both attend the first session of the nationwide consultation on the POCSO Act of 2012, the Supreme Court announced in a press release.

The announcement claimed that in addition to the CJI and the Union minister, other judges from high courts and the supreme court, including Justice S. Ravindra Bhat, will participate in the programme. Cynthia McCaffery, a representative of Unicef India, will also attend.

The consultation, which will commemorate POCSO's tenth anniversary, will include participation from important figures from the Indian government, law enforcement, top judges, state governments, and civil society, according to the statement.

The Supreme Court Committee's seventh such consultation on diverse child safety concerns concludes a string of related state-level consultations held across the nation, according to the statement.

Technical seminars covering a range of POCSO topics, including prevention, rehabilitation, and reintegration of survivors, child-friendly courts, investigation techniques, capacity building, and exchange of best practises, among others, would be held after the opening session, it was stated.

The Supreme Court, the National Council for the Protection of Child Rights, Unicef, and the Government of India would all offer their perspectives on the consultation's conclusion on Sunday, it was noted.
